rod and wire- produced in a range of chemical compositions, physical properties,
and sizes- has become a staple copper source for producers around the
world of wire and cable, cold headed products, and welding wire. Our standard CDA chemistries include phosphor bronze alloys, copper-silicon alloys (silicon bronze), tin alloys, and silver alloys. Each of these metals is offered in a variety of standard rod sizes, tempers, surface qualities, and grain characteristics. Our rod is internally cast and processed, and offered "as cast" as well as rolled, drawn, and shaved. Modern, high-speed casters yield 5/16- inch through 1.1-inch diameter cast rod. Standard rolled rod sizes include the dimensions typically required for wire and cable production: 5/16, 3/8, and 1/2-inch diameters. Drawn product for cold heading is produced for individual size requirements from 1.000 to .250-inch diameter rod. Temper specifications range from soft to full hard to custom values. Products are typically shipped on pallets, stems, or reels. Oxygen free copper offers attractive advantages in electrical properties, drawing performance, and handling on wire and cable producing machinery. Sherburne's oxygen-free rod is offered in a high-end electronic grade as well as in a non-electronic and in two silver compositions. All are characterized by exceptionally high oxygen purity. Our oxygen free 5/16-inch diameter "as cast" rod has developed particular appeal among fine wire producers. It is not subject to the potential for surface damage and inclusions associated with mechanical size reduction of larger-diameter rod. Our plant incorporates the latest casting technology available for high-speed, 5/16 rod production. The installation is one of the largest upcast systems anywhere by the world-renowned caster manufacturer Outokumpu. |
